Jody and I, along with about 75-80 other Malibuites, spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon at Diesel Bookstore listening to Martin Sheen and Professor Doug Kmiec talk about Kmiec’s new book, “Can a Catholic Support Him?” The conversation was stimulating, gracious, and completely one-sided. But since that one side was “our” side, we both felt like it was two hours well spent. (Plus, how often do you get to meet a movie star?)
The talk of the afternoon was the poem Martin Sheen used as the closing, so here it is for everyone to enjoy:
Let My Country Awake
by Rabindranath Tagore
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where the mind is without fear and the head held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought and action;
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
Although the conversation (my new favorite word) was one sided it was still more than that to me. For the first time in months I heard compassion and humility. Professor Kmic (life long Repulican) spoke with a kind and gentle voice but also with authority. He was able to explain to us non-Catholics why certain issues make it difficult for a Catholic to support Obama. But he also went on to explain his personal journey through this campain season. It was also important for me to hear he is an “insider” of the Republican party, working for both President Reagan and the first President Bush. This was not a decission he made to jump off a “sinking ship”.
Then you have Martin Sheen who is a life long Demecrate and activist. He is also a member of the same Catholic Parish as Professor Kmic. He was also very kind with his words. He wrote a beautiful forward to Pro. Kmic’s book. And was very disappointed he did not have the opportunity to purchase books for anyone after the presentation. He offered to purchase one for each memeber of the audience.
The best part of the experience for me was not that they were endorcing a particular canadate. It was that they continually discussed the value of human life. It does not matter what party you are affilicated with or what canadate you vote for until we begin to place value on all human life (I’m not talking about abortion here) no real positive change will happen in our nation or world.
Long story short, I was very moved by the presentation yesterday.
