Today

Today is the 3rd anniversary of unforgettable Hurricane Katrina. Memories.

Today, ironically, is the day we officially close on the sale of our house on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Relief.

Today, our daughter and our many old friends are watching Hurricane Gustav. Anxiety.

Of course, Gustav concerns me because of what hurricanes do, but more than that, I’m concerned about the pyschological reactions of people living in that part of the world. Katrina left some bad karma around there, and although Gustav hasn’t even made it to the Gulf of Mexico yet, it is the first significant threat since “the big one.” I expect it will be more dangerous in the area before the storm than in it.

Keep your eye on the storm, and pray for the people.

Although physically we are not there with you we are in spirit and prayer. It’s a little ironic that I just completed in service training on disaster preparedness (fires to be exact). Our program director wispered to me “don’t let it scare you, we don’t have hurricanes”. I don’t know about you but the thought of a wall of flames around me is just as scary as a wall of water!
Another thing that I was told today is the university does not “evacuate” they “relocate”…..I think I have done this before. As a staff memeber within the student services department I also was given my assignment during disasters…I am a door monitor, I will get to stand at a door and tell people “no” you cannot leave. I should be good at that.

    Hey Al,
Sounds like things are going good for you on the left coast. It is really strange checking the weather map and seeing the projected path of Gustav headed straight for New Orleans, from what I’ve heard the devistation of Katrina had a lot to do with the angle that it made landfall and hopefully Gustav won’t follow suit. I don’t know if that’s true or not, I’m sure you would like to forget more about hurricanes than I’ll ever know, hopefully everyone there will make it through safe. I hope the trip to Dog & Suds didn’t set your GI tract back too much. I enjoyed visiting with you guys. I know you’re probably overwhelmed right now, but drop me a line with your new email address sometime.
