We are big volleyball fans at our house.

Our favorite player of all-time is Erica Grimes. She had some outstanding years playing for “the EDGE” volleyball club (Mobile, Alabama) and Ocean Springs High School (MS) where she served as team captain and was co-MVP with current LSU star, Lauren DeGirolamo.

Of course she’s my daughter, so we may be a teensy bit biased.

Our favorite college player is Brittany Blackwelder, senior middle blocker for the University of South Alabama Jaguars (who are off to a fantastic start this season!). We love Brittany not just for her volleyball skills, but because she was so sweet to Hillary when we first became Jag fans. We’ve stayed friends with Brittany through the wonder that is Facebook.

We’re now at Pepperdine, which is a very good place to be for volleyball fans. We attended the ladies’ home opener last night where they defeated a pesky UC-Santa Barbara team in three straight sets (and got to hang out with the esteemed English professor, Michael Lasley). The Waves are off to a 10-0 start, ranked #14 in the nation, and if they win again this morning and tonight they will have won their fourth straight tournament to begin the season.

We haven’t had time to pick a favorite player just yet, but Julie Rubenstein has to be in the running. She is a senior, best player on the team, and a member of the reserve team for the United States. I read some articles about her last night, and I’m even more impressed with her as a person. Julie plans to play professionally in Europe for a couple of years (the only place a girl CAN play professionally is in Europe), but before long she wants to get to her true goal in life: teaching elementary school.

I’m going to spend the bulk of today in the law library working on my LRW assignment. Tonight, however, we plan to go “catch the Waves” in action once more. I think I’ll bring my camera along tonight and see if I can capture a little of the fun so I can share with all of you.
