Work-a-holic? Or, Spoiled Rotten?

Posted: December 13, 2008 in Lessons

For those scoring at home, I felt pretty good about my Contracts final yesterday. But law school veterans have assured me that how you feel about an exam doesn’t translate into scores to expect. So, I’ll just enjoy the feeling while it lasts.

I’m up early on a Saturday for yet another long, long day of study. Wanting a little bit of sympathy from the world at-large of course. 10-12 hours of study EVERY day for so long now. Intense pressure. Way difficult material.

And then, I read the lyrics from the theme song of my blog – suck it up, and tough it out. Translated: quit being such a whiner.

I mean, I, like many Americans I’m sure, am spoiled. I’ve grown up believing that 8 hours of work should be considered a full day. And that everyone needs two days off every week. Plus extended holidays and vacations. All this for all my jobs that have mainly been indoors with central heat/air.

I’m just saying that I don’t need any sympathy. Hard, hard work is good for me. And though there is such a phenomenon as being “overworked,” and I might add that hard work really has killed a few people along the way, in most cases hard work does a pretty good job of building some much-needed character.

You’ll get all my empathy, Al. Reading outlines and studying for 12-13 hours a day for 17 days in a row became absolutely grueling.

But the best I can figure, it’s better than the alternative.

    Throw the book out ’em!

Sympathy maybe not, but intense respect. As a retiree who thinks spending an hour once a week writing something creative is admirable – I absolutely stand in awe of your decision to change course and undertake an immense challenge.

BTW – have added some reflections to My 100 (or so) Things. Will send you the updated version when your exams are over.

Okay, no sympathy here either. Speaking as someone whose mind no longer functions for 10 consecutive hours on ANY given day (ha,ha), the whole concept is mind-boggling to me!

Ultimately, however, your accomplishment will be an incredible personal reward!

Awww, you guys are making me blush. 🙂

Can’t wait to see your updated list, Bruno!!!
