Dressed For Success

Posted: December 15, 2008 in Miscellaneous

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a student stayed up all night studying for his final. He was so exhausted and so out of it the next morning that he didn’t shower or shave, wore the same clothes he had worn the day before, and went to take his final. Another student noticed and thought, “Hey, my professor isn’t even here, so why am I dressed like a normal person for my final exam – next time, I’m dressing like that guy!”

And a fashion trend began. Or, an anti-fashion trend began.

Now, spread across time and space, it is a worldwide tradition for students to show up for their final exams looking like crap. It is part of the college experience.

It has been 20 years or so since this particular old man started college, but I have noticed that as much as some things have changed, others have stayed the same. No make-up for the ladies. No shaving for the men. It’s finals season.

I have no real point here.

I did start thinking about it however. The phrase “dressed for success” seems a little out of place during finals season. Are there other times or places when you intentionally look your worst on your biggest day? Probably, if I had the time & energy to think about it. But none come to mind right away. Maybe if you’re competing in an ugly contest or something, but that shouldn’t count.

For some reason I still remember one of the high school principals I used to work for telling of a research study another principal conducted. He had a “dress up” day and a “dress down” day for the students every month. He secretly recorded discipline incidents over several years, and you may have guessed the result: student behavior was markedly better on days where they dressed nice as opposed to when they dressed down.

Some point in there about how you dress affects how you feel about yourself, and how you feel about yourself affects your behavior.

I am officially rambling.

And thinking about renting a tux for my Civ Pro final on Thursday. I need all the help I can get.
