Mr. October

Posted: October 1, 2008 in Miscellaneous

Welcome to October, a lovely time of year to watch the leaves turn breathtaking colors and to celebrate the most devilish of holidays. This year, it’s even a lovely month for Chicago baseball fans!

Here in Malibu, I’m pretty sure we welcomed October by allowing the Santa Ana winds to destroy our typically perfect weather. If what I experienced yesterday was NOT the Santa Ana winds, then I don’t want to meet the real thing. Sheesh, it was hot! For just a second, I thought I was back in the Deep South.

In Raymond Chandler’s 1938 short story, “Red Wind,” he described the Santa Ana’s by saying, “Those hot dry winds that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands’ necks. Anything can happen.”

This does not bode well for the Halloween season.

But what can you say? Some like it hot. And ya gotta love L.A.

Randy Newman gives a shout out to these Santa Ana winds in his tribute to this great city. Check it out – my new digs…

The only time I have felt so miserably hot was the first few nights directly after Hurricane Katrina. I did not pick up any knives but I thought about it!!!!!! Hillary said it was so hot that her contact solution was even warm this morning.

The strangest part of the weather is how hot and bright the sun is everyday. But most days (unlike yesterday & today) the breeze is so nice you don’t notice the heat.

I guess the good news is that because of Katrina this isn’t such a new experience.

Did I mention that our apartment doesn’t have AC?

Ugh! The 2 days after Katrina were miserable. I remember holding a wet cloth while we were sleeping and periodically wiping down the kids, just to cool them off. All I can say is, “BLESS YOUR HEARTS”!! I’m feelin’ good in my air conditioned office right now : – )

    Love you guys!!
